CAES9350 Academic English for Dentistry

Course Description

This English-in-the-Discipline (ED) course provides dentistry students with language support for the Community Health Project (CHP) offered by the Faculty of Dentistry. Throughout the course, students will develop effective language skills for preparing their CHP research report. Input will also be provided to enhance their ability to deliver a professional oral presentation that takes the form of a press conference appropriate for the purpose of the research as well as the audience. Emphasizing academic literacy in scientific research, the course enables students to apply their understanding of disciplinary research and presentation skills to other academic and professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Write different sections of a research report, using effective structural and linguistic devices
  • Evaluate self and peer performances in writing
  • Orally present research with effective presentation strategies, visuals and appropriate language.
