CAES2006 Extensive English Reading for University Success

Course Description

This course offers students the opportunity to improve their English reading ability through strategically-aware, teacher-supported extensive reading of primarily narrative texts. The course cultivates reader self-awareness through a range of diagnostic assessments and reflective tasks, as well as cultural awareness through extensive reading. Students create and execute a reading plan suitable for their current ability and interests with the support of text analysis tools and extensive reading coaching. The course will equip students with fundamental strategies for sustained reading and vocabulary improvement, as well as skills for articulating original perspectives on long texts, which are transferrable to broader academic, social and professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Effectively adopt key theories and strategies for extensive reading
  • Select, read, and achieve a critical understanding of a substantial volume of book-length extensive reading material suitable for their own ability and interests
  • Compose reader responses and reviews which demonstrate creative, critical engagement with narrative texts
  • Critically reflect on and evaluate the progress of their extensive reading development
