Sherman was trained as a sociolinguist. Her professional journey began as a researcher on an ESRC-funded project (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) investigating the bilingual practices of the immigrant Chinese community in Tyneside, England. She later pursued her doctoral research on the indigenous Hakka speech community in Hong Kong, examining the sociolinguistic factors that influence language maintenance and shift. Her work earned her the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong.
Sherman’s research and teaching interests cover various aspects of language, culture, and communication. She has enjoyed teaching courses in sociolinguistics, multilingualism, applied linguistics, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, EAP and research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in universities in Hong Kong and the UK. Prior to joining CAES, she served as Programme Director and Linguistics Coordinator of the BA English programme at HKSYU. She has additionally undertaken roles in quality assurance for self-financed universities in Hong Kong, including serving as external examiner for undergraduate programmes. In 2023, Sherman joined CAES, where she currently teaches courses on the MA in Applied Linguistics and MA TESOL programmes.
In addition to her academic roles, Sherman actively participates in judging city-wide English public speaking and writing competitions for local students.
