Prior to joining CAES, Clarence taught English at Beijing Foreign Studies University and Tsinghua University, and conducted research on effective language teachers with the China National Research Center for Foreign Language Education. At CAES, he initially focused on his doctoral studies, exploring teachers’ beliefs and practices. After graduating in 2008, he began teaching full-time at the Centre.
At the undergraduate level, Clarence teaches academic and professional English to students across various disciplines, including arts, business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and science. He also supervises MA Capstone Projects in Applied Linguistics. From 2015 to 2020, he served as the Program Coordinator for English-in-the-Discipline (ED) courses for the Faculty of Education, and from 2020 to 2023, he coordinated ED courses for the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry.
His research interests include English for Academic and Specific Purposes and language teacher development. He is also the Editor of the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics (https://caes.hku.hk/ajal/index.php/ajal).
