Summer Institute for Students (May 23-27, 2011)

The Summer Institute for Students offered by the Centre for Applied English Studies is now open for application to all students at HKU. Please read the course descriptions carefully and make sure that you understand the nature of the particular course you are interested in.  If you have any questions, you should contact our General Office at 2859 2004.

Places on the courses are strictly limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Most of the courses are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students. A few courses are open to students in specific faculties or departments. Please check the following course information carefully.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE & ENROLMENT

If you would like to join a course, please fill in an application form and return the completed form to the General Office of the Centre for Applied English Studies, Room 705, 7/F, K.K. Leung Building.

All courses are offered free of charge. You may enrol for more than one course but you are advised to look at the schedules to ensure there are no clashes.

Closing date for applications: April 29, 2011

Class lists giving student names as well as details about classrooms will be posted on the noticeboard of the Centre for Applied English Studies and this website from May 11, 2011.  Please check these details before the commencement date of the course.

 

WITHDRAWAL

If for any reason you cannot attend a course for which you have registered, you should notify the Centre for Applied English Studies in writing, so that your place can be offered to another applicant in time.  The Centre will consider your application for withdrawal if your reason for withdrawing is justified. You must withdraw in writing (with supporting documents attached) on or before Monday, May 16, 2011.

 

ATTENDANCE

Places on Summer IELTS Workshops are limited.  For this reason, you are not allowed to transfer your place to another applicant, or to send a substitute in your place for all or any of the class sessions.  Please note that students who arrive late and/or leave the class early may be marked absent for a part or the whole of the session.  Please also note that you need an attendance of not less than 80% of the same class group in order to receive a course certificate.  If you are unable to attend your class due to illness, you should submit a medical certificate.

Courses are held in the teaching rooms of the Centre for Applied English Studies as well as central lecture rooms.  Please consult thenoticeboard on the 7th floor, K.K. Leung Building or this website at any time from May 11, 2011 to check the location of your classes.

 

SUMMER COURSE CERTIFICATES

A course completion certificate will be presented to all participants who have an attendance of not less than 80% of the course.

 

TYPHOONS AND RAINSTORMS: Cancellation of classes

Under the procedures specified in Dec 1999, if either a Typhoon No. 8 (or higher) or a Rainstorm Black Warning Signal is hoisted or in force at or after 6:00amall morning classes will be cancelled automatically. Similarity, if either of the signals is hoisted or in force at or after11:00amall afternoon classes will also be cancelled accordingly.

Classes that have already started when a Rainstorm Black Warning Signal is hoisted will normally be continued until the end of the session. In the case of a Typhoon Signal No. 8 (or higher), classes which have already started will be suspended immediately.

If a lesson is cancelled or suspended due to bad weather, there will not be a make-up class.
