SHI Kaiqi (Kelvin) is a PhD student in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. His doctoral research investigates the relative effects of structured input on the processing and retention of English past tense regular forms. Building upon the structured input research framework, his study aims to measure online effects of input processing through a self-paced reading test, analyzing accuracy, response time, and reading time among L2 learners. This methodological approach provides valuable insights into how learners process grammar in real time.

Kelvin holds two master’s degrees with distinction: an MEd in English for Academic Purposes from The Education University of Hong Kong, and an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hong Kong. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Applied Linguistics at HKU.

Prior to his doctoral studies, Kelvin worked extensively as an IELTS instructor in Mainland China. During this period, he observed that many Chinese learners struggled with English grammar, with grammatical errors frequently limiting their performance in speaking and writing. This professional experience motivated him to bridge theory and practice by combining classroom insights with academic research.

His MA dissertation focused on intentional vocabulary learning through repeated documentary watching, while his current PhD research centers on structured input. Unlike traditional approaches that rely heavily on explicit explanations and mechanical drills, Kelvin’s work seeks to demonstrate that EFL learners can accelerate language acquisition by adopting effective input processing strategies and avoiding default, yet flawed, ones.

Kelvin’s research contributes to a growing body of scholarship in second language acquisition, with the aim of improving pedagogical practices for grammar instruction and deepening our understanding of how learners process input in real time.
