4. Family relationships in the 1990s Introduction
With modernisation of the existing world, peoples lives become more busy and
diversified. Size of families has also reduced from the previous extended one to nuclear
and other forms of family such as single-parent families and reconstituted families. With
changes in the structure of family from the extended family with several generations
living together to nuclear family with only one or two generations only, relationships
among family members are also being affected (1). This has arouse my interest to
investigate whether family size affects family relationship and is there any other
co-factors also exist. Through participant observation in different types of families,
family relationship in the 1990s are being analysed. Nuclear family, extended family and
single-parent family are being investigated to see the relationship between different
generations.
