CAES Summer Programme 2026<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The Summer Programme offered by the Centre for Applied English Studies will be open for application to all UGC-funded students<\/strong> at the University of Hong Kong on 17 April 2026<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please read the course descriptions carefully and make sure that you understand the nature of the particular course you are interested in. All courses this summer will be held in person.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Places on the courses are limited and so allocated on a first-come-first-served basis<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Application Procedure & Enrollment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0Registration will begin on <\/span><\/span>17 April 2026 and end on 17 May 2026<\/span><\/strong>. Please click here<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <\/span>to register. Enrollment results will be announced on 19 May 2026<\/span>, and students will be notified by email.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All courses are offered free of charge<\/strong>. However, there will be a penalty for those who attend less than 80% of the lesson (see Money Penalty<\/strong> below for more details).

You may enroll in more than one course but you are advised to look at the schedules to ensure there are no clashes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students are welcome to apply. However, as the Summer Programme is operated purely on UGC funds, we can only serve students of UGC-funded programmes<\/span>. If you are unsure whether your programme is UGC-funded, please check with your faculty.

      Withdrawal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      If for any reason you cannot attend a course for which you have registered, you should notify the Centre for Applied English Studies in writing, so that your place can be offered to another applicant in time. The Centre will consider your application for withdrawal if your reason is justified. You must withdraw in <\/strong>writing<\/span><\/a> <\/span>(<\/span><\/span>with supporting documents attached) on or before 22 May 2026, 5 pm.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Change of Course(s)\/Sub-class(es)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      If you wish to change the course(s) or sub-class(es) you are registered for, you must submit a written request to the Centre for Applied English Studies at least two weeks prior to the start date of the new course(s) or sub-class(es)<\/strong> you wish to switch to. This request should include any relevant supporting documents. Please note, your request will only be considered if your reason for the change is deemed justifiable by the Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Attendance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      Places on the summer courses are limited. For this reason, you are not allowed to transfer your place to another applicant, or to send a substitute in your place for all or any of the class sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Please note that only students who are on the class list can attend the course<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Students who arrive late and\/or leave the class early may be marked absent for a part or the whole of the session. Please also note that you need to attend at least 80% of the same class group in order to receive a course completion certificate<\/strong>. If you are unable to attend your class due to illness, you should submit a medical certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Courses are held in person. Once successfully enrolled, you will be given the classroom location.
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Money Penalty<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      The goal of our Summer Programme courses is to assist students with the English skills they wish to develop over the summer. To achieve this goal, 80% class attendance is expected of all students who register for our Summer Programme courses. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Students who do not achieve at least 80% class attendance without a valid reason (supported by a medical certificate or other relevant documents) will be subject to a penalty of HK$500<\/span>. This explanation must be provided to the respective class teacher and also sent to caes-summer@hku.hk<\/a> within one week of the course completion.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      The purpose of this policy is to ensure students complete the summer courses that they have enrolled in. Students who have not attained 80% class attendance will receive a soft copy of the student invoice for the said penalty by way of e-mail attachment to their \u201c@hku.hk\u201d e-mail account. Students who failed to pay the penalty within 30 days after the invoice due date shall be de-registered and prohibited from using University facilities and services. For subsequent reinstatement of student status, the student will have to pay a surcharge of 10% (HK$50) of the outstanding amount.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Course Cancellation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      CAES reserves the right to cancel the course should the enrollment fall below the expected number. You will be notified about the cancellation before the class start date.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Typhoons and Rainstorms: Cancellation of Classes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      If either a Typhoon No. 8 (or higher) or a Rainstorm Black Warning Signal is hoisted or in force at or after 6:00 am, all morning classes will be cancelled automatically. Similarly, if either of the signals is hoisted or in force at or after 11:00 am, all afternoon classes will be cancelled accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Classes that have already started when a Rainstorm Black Warning Signal is hoisted will normally be continued until the end of the session. In the case of Typhoon Signal No. 8 (or higher), classes which have already started will be suspended immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n

      If a lesson is cancelled or suspended due to bad weather, there will not be a make-up class. Your teacher may arrange to provide self-study course materials.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
