Self-Assessment 1

Hotel Restaurant Captain

I have been working in the XX restaurant outlet for six years. I was promoted to Captain last year and have since then taken up more administrative duties in addition to handling operational matters. Overall, I consider myself a positive and reliable employee who performs my roles as a captain in a competent manner.

In this past year, my major responsibilities included:
- Served food and beverages to restaurant customers;
- Handled customers’ relations;
- Supervised the work of 4 junior waiters and 1 senior waiter;
- Assisted Assistant Managers in rosters preparation; and
- Discharged other duties delegated by the Assistant Managers and Managers

  • Comment on work ethics and evaluation
  • Example of a strength

I get along well with all colleagues and gain a lot of respect and trust from them. I maintain a fair yet open attitude when it comes to delegation of work and duties. On the one hand, I make sure each of them has a fair share of workload; on the other hand, I take into account special requests made by colleagues. For example, XX was pregnant last year and requested not to be given night shift during her final trimester. I endorsed her request and raised it with my superiors. We later worked together to sort out the necessary logistical re-arrangements.

  • Comment on work ethics and evaluation
  • Example of a strength

I realize there is room for improvement in my work. I sometimes feel insecure and lack confidence when handling customers’ complaints. Once there was a customer complaining about his food quality. I apologized to the customer and sought help from one of the managers immediately. In hindsight, I should have been more proactive in providing assistance and response to the customer.

  • Example of a weakness
  • Reflection for improvement

I also need to further develop my wine knowledge. I missed several professional development sessions on wine last year because of personal commitments. I hope I have chances to make up for it the coming year.

  • Professional development plan

With an increasing number of Japanese customers, I am also determined to work on my Japanese to the level that I can engage a simple conversation with our Japanese customers.
