Workshop: Writing Right: Writing Accurately and Clearly

Co-ordinator: Dr. Lillian Wong

Aim:
The aim of this workshop is to help postgraduate students improve their writing by raising their awareness of linguistic features and rhetorical devices in discipline-specific writing.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, students’ awareness of different language features and rhetorical devices in discipline-specific writing will be enhanced. In particular, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate their awareness of linguistic features in academic writing in their own writing.

Strategies:

Exploring language features and rhetorical devices in texts from students’ own disciplines through in-depth analysis of individual texts.

  • Building a corpus using a number of discipline-specific texts to examine language patterns.
  • Writing short texts, including text analysis and text reformulation
  • Formative feedback by the workshop facilitator
