Workshop: Effective Academic Speaking Skills

Aim:
This workshop aims to provide postgraduate students an opportunity to practice speaking about their research to an educated, non-specialist audience.

 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, students should be more aware of the key features of effective academic speaking in the presentation context. More specifically, students will

  • have a clearer idea of areas that they need to improve
  • demonstrate awareness of features and skills required to make an effective academic presentation;
  • present their research in a way that interests, informs, and engages the audience.

 

Strategies:

  • Presentation of research in a small group and individually to the whole class
  • Peer feedback
  • Formative feedback from workshop facilitator highlighting generic and individual areas to improve
