HKU CAES Annual Report 2022-2023

The Publicity and Outreach Committee (POC) primarily aims to raise the profile of and create a positive image for the Centre, as well as to make its name known to the HKU and wider Hong Kong communities. In the 2022-2023 academic year, ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all publicity events returned to the face-to-face mode on the HKU campus, including the Faculty of Arts Open Day, HKU Information Day, and Faculty Induction Programmes. POC contributed to these University events through academic lectures, information sharing sessions, and distribution of publicity materials to promote our English language enhancement courses and support services to students. During the Faculty Induction Weeks 2022, Programme Coordinators for various English-in-the-Discipline (ED) courses were also invited by their respective faculties to deliver briefing sessions to first-year students about courses offered. On the HKU Information Day on 29 October 2022, colleagues partnered with some Student Ambassadors to manage a CAES Booth that was located at the University Street to reach out to more than 2,000 students and teachers from local secondary schools. Visitors were keen on asking questions about CAES courses and services at the Booth. Two academic lectures were also given by our colleagues, Dr. Ken Lau and Simon Scanlon, to the participants. Another highlight of the POC work was organizing two major events to mark the CAES 30 th Anniversary, which included the Anniversary Gala Dinner that was held on 4 May 2023 at The Ming Pavilion, and the CAES 30 th Anniversary Colloquium that took place on 17 May 2023 on the HKU Centennial Campus. In the new academic year, POC will continue its mission of making the Centre’s courses and services known to students, academic and the Hong Kong community through various channels and reach out to and engage more with HKU students and faculty partners.
