HKU CAES Annual Report 2022-2023
Summer Programme CAES offered the Summer Programme and resumed face-to-face teaching from 29 May to 9 June during the 2022-2023 academic year to allow for a more interactive environment. With a total of nine courses (13 classes altogether), there was a total of 283 students who applied, 195 students who successfully enrolled, and 181 students who reached 80% attendance or higher. The Centre offered a wide variety of summer courses (with enrolment numbers) as follows: We were pleased to pilot three new courses, which were very well received. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion course created by Wesley McLaughlin and Creativity in Everyday English course created by Dr. Locky Law, will be revised to be offered to our HKU staff members in the coming new semester in the 2023-2024 academic year. Essential English Skills for University Studies focuses on English for academic purpose skills, taught by our four teachers, Albert Wong, Doris Wong, Mable Choi and Dr. Vivian Kwan. Throughout the course, there were participants from the EAP Teacher Professional Development Programme joining the class for observation. The course was met with a very positive response from both students and the participants. Overall, we received excellent feedback from students as well as numerous comments requesting for even more in-depth content and longer classes. We also received a considerable number of requests for online class options so that those who have returned home can also take the Summer Programme courses. With the continued popularity of our Summer Programmes, in the next academic year, we will consider expanding our range of courses and offering a wider range of course types as well as a possibility with some courses being online for greater flexibility. At CAES, professional development occurs in teacher learning communities. Teachers are members of several communities including teaching teams, core teams, project teams, mentorship and ad hoc partnerships with colleagues. These communities create a culture of participation across CAES that brings teachers together to share, reflect, learn from one another and improve our practices. In the 2022-2023 academic year, professional development at CAES focused on the following three areas: Leadership and Personal Understanding Teachers formed a leadership reading group, regularly meeting to discuss the ideas in this book: Leadership Behavior DNA: Discovering Natural Talents and Managing Differences. Sharing Sessions The Professional Development team provided a regular platform for staff to share information about projects, development activities, new skills and courses taken to inspire others. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Scholarship thematic groups ran professional development sessions sharing scholarship plans and progress in three areas - assessment practices, classroom pedagogy and materials development.
