Specially-funded English Courses Specially-funded English Courses (SFEC) offer a variety of workplace and academic English workshops to meet the learning needs of HKU students and staff. All lessons are conducted as plenaries, lectures or small group tutorials using customised materials designed to cater to targeted learners’ professional and discipline-specific academic English demands. The courses are designed based on faculties’ requests for academic, professional and workplace English support to meet the learners’ language needs. In the 2022-2023 academic year, we offered 27 courses to 1,650 students from different faculties (Arts, Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Medicine, and Social Sciences) and non-academic/administrative units at HKU. In the 2022-2023 academic year, we offered a range of workplace English courses to 153 non-academic HKU staff. This is a significant increase of 20% from the 2021-2022 enrolment into workplace English courses. The following courses covering various aspects of English workplace communication were offered in the 2022-2023 academic year: • English Communication Skills for HKU Graduate Management Trainees • Grammar Essentials at Work • Professional English Basics Level 1 (Beginners) • Professional English Basics Level 2 (Intermediate) • Workplace Meetings • Workplace Speaking • Workplace Writing CAES offers teacher training programmes (commissioned by the Education Bureau, HKSAR) to in-service English teachers at primary and secondary schools to provide them with up-to-date knowledge about teaching English as a second language. Programmes are tailor-made to enhance teachers’ teaching skills and subject knowledge through hands-on activities, teacher demonstrations and discussions. In support of the implementation of the English language curriculum by the Education Bureau, our programmes target various aspects of language teaching. A total of 550 local teachers participated in our teacher training programmes in the 2022-2023 academic year. The SFEC curricula and lessons have been overwhelmingly well-received by HKU students, staff, faculties, and local teachers. All of the courses and workshops received positive feedback regarding their relevance and teaching quality, with exceptionally high satisfaction ratings for their interactive delivery, the relevance of the materials provided, and the level of student engagement. The courses aim to improve learners’ skills in academic English literacy, dissertation writing, use of specialized terminology, and professional presentations.
