All of our courses have been designed in consultation with faculty colleagues to ensure that they are teaching communication skills which are well-aligned with students’ curricula. In the 2021-2022 academic year, the following courses were offered: Dr. Lillian Wong was awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in November 2021. The reviewers observed that “this was a strong application where the applicant clearly demonstrates leadership in teaching and learning”. She is proud to gain this globally valued badge of professional recognition which affirms the achievements and impact of her leadership in enhancing quality of learning and teaching within HKU and the wider higher education community in Hong Kong and internationally. It showcased some important and innovative CAES initiatives that she has led, including enhancement of the Graduate School English programme quality and academic practice through a data-driven learning approach to support discipline-specific research writing and development of the Hong Kong Continuing Professional Development Hub (HKCPD Hub) with a framework of communities of practice to encourage English teachers across universities to share best practices and innovation and provide opportunities for professional learning and collaboration in scholarship. She reflected on her strengths and commitment in areas that are particularly important to her as a professional educator and leader in higher education, including academic excellence, scholarship, discipline and pedagogic research, evidence-based teaching, innovative curricula and digital practices, continuing professional development and knowledge dissemination, mentoring and supporting colleagues’ professional practice. She continues to strive for her professional growth as an effective teacher, leader and teacher educator through leadership, scholarship and mentorship. She is passionate about supporting other teachers to make the most of their skills and experiences and continue to grow and support one another to provide the best learning opportunities for our students. Applying for the University Teaching Excellence Award (TEA) involved developing a portfolio showcasing one’s teaching philosophy. In 2021, Patrick Desloge won the award based on his teaching philosophy building on the areas of experiential learning, digital literacy and students-as-partners, and how these areas intersect. This work was showcased through the work Patrick did as the Programme Director of the Nurturing Global Leaders Programme (CAES2001), the developer of the Digital Literacy Lab and as the course coordinator for a series of free elective courses focussing on digital communication (CAES2002 Online Digital Storytelling in English and CAES2004 Communication and Community Engagement through Podcasting).
