HKU-CAES-Annual-Report_2021-22
COMMITTEES CAES operates a number of in-house committees with clearly defined roles in order to streamline operations and allow for more effective management. The key committees are the CAES Management Committee (CMC), the Engagement, Research and Innovation Committee (ERIC), the Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) and the Publicity and Outreach Committee (POC). Their roles and their major work in 2021-2022 are described below. Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) Publicity and Outreach Committee (POC) Members Members Chair Chair Secretary Secretary The Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC), in partnership with all staff at CAES, aims to promote high quality teaching and learning within the Centre. It supports teachers and Programme Coordinators in facilitating dialogue about teaching and learning quality and disseminating teaching and learning quality information to students, staff of the Centre, the University at large, CAES External Examiners and the University Grants Committee. Regular duties of the TLC include (i) discussion of course modifications to ensure course changes bring about positive outcomes in terms of course quality, (ii) the collection of and analysis of quality assurance data from students and External Examiners, and (iii) the compilation of reports for submission to the university and the UGC on course and teaching quality. The TLC also organises and leads Staff Student Consultative Committee meetings at the end of each semester to understand and respond to student perspectives on CAES courses. This year, the TLC has also spent time supporting teachers with online teaching in response to the pandemic. The Publicity and Outreach Committee (POC) primarily aims to raise the profile of and create a positive image for the Centre, as well as to make its name known to the HKU and wider Hong Kong communities. In the 2021-2022 academic year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, most publicity events were conducted virtually, including the Faculty of Arts Open Day, HKU Information Day, and Faculty Induction Programmes. POC contributed to these virtual University events through live chat and information sharing sessions (e.g. pre-recorded videos and electronic promotional course materials) to promote our English language enhancement courses and support services to students. During the Faculty Induction Weeks 2021, Programme Coordinators for various English-in- the-Discipline courses were also invited by their respective faculties to deliver online briefing sessions to first- year students about courses offered. On the HKU Information Day in October 2021, a live student sharing session was successfully held for the POC Chair to talk with three former CUE students about their learning experience in their first year at HKU. In the new academic year, POC will continue its mission of making the Centre’s courses and services known to students, academic and the Hong Kong community through various channels and reach out to and engage more with HKU students and faculty partners. Miranda LEGG Lisa CHEUNG Engagement, Research and Innovation Committee (ERIC) Members Chair Secretary The Engagement, Research and Innovation Committee (ERIC) is a committee set up in CAES to ensure that our scholarship, enterprise and innovation strategic plans are discussed and in line with University and Faculty’s plans. Although ERIC is not a decision-making Committee, it is an instrumental forum for facilitating, implementing and monitoring CAES’s new strategy (2022-2025) particularly in relation to our income generation and scholarship plans. During the 2021-2022 academic year, ERIC discussed, considered and implemented the following: (i) the development and implementation of a new income generation strategic plan; (ii) the development and implementation of a strategic plan for scholarship; (iii) the development and implementation of a new mentoring system for staff in CAES; (iv) the development of a new scholarship web-site page; (v) the development of three main scholarship thematic areas in CAES: assessment practices, classroom pedagogy, and materials development; (vi) the development and implementation of a buyout system to support scholarship among staff; and (vii) the development of a new EAP teacher training programme.
