SUMMER PROGRAMME 2021-2022 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, the Summer Programme was offered online during the 2021- 2022 academic year to allow more flexibility for students who are in Hong Kong and abroad to participate. During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Centre continued to offer its own Summer Programme from 30 May to 17 June, 2022. With a total of 7 courses (17 classes altogether), a total of 523 students applied, 397 students successfully enrolled, and 377 students reached 80% attendance or higher. This indicates a 9.8% increase in the Summer Programme student enrolment compared to 358 students who applied in the 2020-2021 academic year. CAES strongly believes that professional development is vital for bringing about the best possible student learning outcomes. At CAES, professional development occurs in teacher learning communities. Teachers are often members of several communities including teaching teams, core teams, project teams, mentorship and ad hoc partnerships with colleagues. These communities create a culture of participation across CAES that brings teachers together to share, reflect and learn from one another. This has been particularly crucial in the past few years as we have all faced unprecedented challenges with teaching and learning activities taking place online. In the 2021-2022 academic year, professional development at CAES focussed on the following four areas: CAES ran an induction programme to develop effective mentorship practices across the Centre. This induction programme was run by Visiting Professor, Dr. Stephen Corbett. The Centre developed a new framework for scholarship at CAES which took into account our unique context and staff profile. The Professional Development team ran some input sessions on leadership and personal understanding. Teachers also formed a leadership reading group, regularly meeting to discuss the ideas in the book. The Professional Development team provided a regular platform for staff to share information about projects, development activities, new skills, courses taken to inspire others. The Centre offered a wide variety of summer courses from June to August 2021 as follows: A new summer course Creativity in Everyday English was offered, which was well received by students. Overall, students provided excellent feedback to both our teachers and our courses. We have received numerous student comments requesting for even more in-depth contents and longer classes. We will explore the possibility of expanding our selection of courses and offering a wider range of course types. With the continued popularity of our Summer Programmes, we hope to offer these courses again through face-to-face teaching in the classroom and consider expanding our courses in the next academic year.
