The Centre offers all HKUMPhil and PhD students five workshops and the PostgraduateWriting Support Service (via the Graduate School). It also offers a special intensive English course to selected postgraduate students. In addition, research postgraduate students can avail themselves of the Communication Support Services (CSS) at CAES. • Discovering Yourself through Creative Story Writing & Storytelling • English Pronunciation • IELTS Speaking • IELTS Writing • IELTS Reading and Listening • “Know your bae from your boo.” Written and Spoken Features of Casual Native Speaker English • R.I.S.E - Resume & Interview Skills in English In addition to the Centre’s own Summer Institute courses, we have offered a credit-bearing course in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts’ Summer Institute in the Arts and Humanities. This year ARTS1013 was offered with a total of 15 students via Zoom. ARTS1010 was cancelled during summer 2021, however, we hope to offer these courses again next summer in the classroom. CAES SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR STUDENTS SUMMER INSTITUTE IN THE ARTS & HUMANITIES LIST OF COURSES CAES offers the following five workshops focusing on either speaking or writing skills: • The academic writing workshop helps students with specific language issues that have been observed to cause the most difficulties in writing a thesis and highlights areas of language use which are of particular relevancewhen reviewing thework of other researchers. • The academic speaking skills workshop provides ample opportunities for students to practise and refine their ability to present their research with their audience in mind. • The workshops Getting Published in Academic Journals (Sciences) and Getting Published in Academic Journals (Humanities) show students how to publish their research. • Another workshop, Managing Your Confirmation Seminar and Viva, aims at helping students maximize their communication effectiveness in their confirmation seminar and viva. • The Centre offers a special intensive English course for selected students from non-English medium universities. This course aims to develop students’ ability to produce coherent academic texts with grammatical accuracy and appropriate choice of vocabulary. It also helps students improve their speaking skills by focusing on their confidence, fluency, pronunciation and knowledge of effective communicative strategies. • This service aims to assist individual research postgraduate students who need help with their academic writing in English. All current full-time and part-time MPhil/PhD students are eligible for the services listed here during their candidature for their degrees, and each student is entitled to 4 hours of free consultations. GRADUATE STUDENT ACADEMICWRITING SUPPORT COURSE WORKSHOPS SUMMER COURSES CAES WORK ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT FOR RESEARCH POSTGRADUATES CAES WORK Due to the COVID-19 situation in Hong Kong, CAES offered the Summer Institute Programme in summer 2021 via Zoom with the exception of one course, which was taught face-to-face in the classroom. We hope to offer these courses again next summer through face-to-face teaching in the classroom. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the Centre continued to offer its own CAES Summer Institute from 7 June to 25 June, 2021. With a total of seven courses (15 classes altogether), there was a total of 358 students enrolled, with 338 students who reached 80% attendance or higher.
