Whatever the writing assignment, it is important to be aware of your writing purpose.

With undergraduate research reports, as with the Literature Review, we can talk about generally-agreed conventions regarding structure and argumentative style. But  the purpose is different, in that you have now moved to the stage of conducting your own empirical piece of research.  You have moved from second-hand academic study, to first-hand discovery and testing of the theories and methods of academic investigation.   The main difference is the move from secondary to primary research.
